Wisconsin has 64 rail trails totaling 1,259 miles! Congratulations Wisconsin!! In addition, they have 42 planned projects which will add 656 more miles.

Most of the trails are maintained by the state and require state trail passes. Passes are sold by the day or for the year. If you are going to ride more than three days, it's best to buy an annual pass. Some trails, however, were developed by private groups and those riding them must have special passes. The Omaha Trail out of Elroy requires a special pass; so does the Cheese Trail in southern Wisconsin.

The town of Elroy is a great place to start. Three trails, The "400" State, Omaha and Elroy/Sparta, have endpoints there. They have a motto "The place where the trails meet." For information on that area, refer to www.elroywi.com.

The Elroy/Sparta trail takes you, of course, from Elroy to Sparta. Sparta has endpoints for both the Elroy/Sparta and La Crosse River Trails, and calls itself "The Bicycle Capital of the World." La Crosse has endpoints for the La Crosse River and Great River Trails.

Most of the trails we have ridden have very smooth, hard-packed sandstone surfaces. We think the people in Wisconsin are so very fortunate to have state leaders who see the value of reclaiming abandoned railroad beds and turning them into multipurpose trails. We are told that people enjoy these trails in the winter to cross-country ski. Some of them permit snowmobiling.
