Following is our experience when we rode this trail August 2003:
The Hiawatha Rail Trail is a 15 mile trail built on the abandoned
Milwaukee Railroad bed and is considered one of the most scenic
trails in the country. This railroad route crossed the rugged
Bitterroot Mountains between Idaho and Montana and was famous
for the long St. Paul Pass, or "Taft" Tunnel, which burrows
for 1.66 miles under the state line.
The trail runs between the East Portal Trailhead in Montana and Pearson in
Idaho and goes through
eight tunnels (one was closed when we were there) and
travels over seven high trestles following the mountainous
terrain along the Loop Creek drainage.
The trail is operated and maintained by the Lookout Pass Ski
Area and fees are collected from all users. A shuttle bus
is available from Lookout Pass for those who wish to ride
downhill only. For information see the
