We are senior citizens who were looking for a way to exercise for health reasons and who always thought bicycling would be fun if we could find someplace to ride without dealing with traffic. When someone told us that an old railroad bed had been turned into a bicycle trail within a two-hour drive of our home, we immediately checked it out. As soon as we put our bicycles on the trail, my husband said "This is EXACTLY what we've been looking for!"

That was in the Spring of 1990. Since that time our vacations have been planned with the purpose of riding as many rail trails in as many states as possible.

Rail Trails have been called "Recycled Railroads;" they are abandoned railroad beds that have been reclaimed for multipurpose use. According to the surface, they are used for walking or rolling a wheelchair, bicycling, skating, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and sometimes four-wheeling.

It's so great to see groups of families and friends that include all ages, from little children who have just learned to ride to great grandparents, having so much fun on the trails. We call them "family value trails."
