When it's still too cold to ride in North Carolina,
the weather is often nicer on the lower South
Carolina coast. Hilton Head has bike paths all
over the island. The paths in Sea Pines are
wonderful - past beautiful golf courses, a
horse farm and peaceful lagoons with alligators
and turtles lying about.
If you are not staying inside Sea Pines you are
not allowed to ride in on your bike, but must
go in with your vehicle and bikes paying a fee.
We think the trails are worth the fee.
If you are into bird watching, the Sea Pines
Forest Preserve is a great place for doing it.
We found lots of deep sand in the roads and had
to push our bikes a lot, but it was well worth
the trouble. Have you ever seen a live oak
tree completely covered with snowy egrets? A
TV camera never captured anything prettier.
When the tide is out, the beach is hard-packed
and a great place to ride.
By-the-way, if you like biking AND tennis AND/OR golf, you'll
think you are in heaven!
