Biking Along Pennsylvania's Allegheny Highlands Trail

This trail currently runs 18 miles on the Casselman River with end points at Garrett and Markleton. The surface is hard-packed sand stone.

In the month of June when the mountain laurel is in bloom and ferns grow everywhere in the woods, you feel as if you are riding in God's garden! On this trail we saw deer and two species of birds we had never seen before - the Baltimore Oriole and the Scarlet Tanager.

The Allegheny Highlands Trail will eventually link the Youghiogheny River Trail with the C & O Canal towpath completing a trail from Pittsburgh to Washington. For details on plans for this 400-mile trail see: http://www.atatrail.org. Another reference is: Free Wheeling Easy in Western Pennsylvania
